Kate Winslet was born on October 5, 1975 in Reading, England to theater actors Sally Anne and Roger John Winslet. She enrolled in the drama school Redroofs Theatre School at age 11 and made her first acting job in a TV ad for the kids’ cereal Sugar Puffs. Her first role came in the small screen with a guest appearance on the British series “Shrink,” followed by “Dark Season,” “Get Back,” and “Casualty.” Kate Winslet then appeared in the TV-movie “Anglo-Saxon Attitudes.”
Her breakthrough role came when she beat out hundreds of hopefuls for the part of Marianne Dashwood in “Sense and Sensibility,” which earned Kate Winslet her first Oscar nod and first BAFTA award. After appearing in the movies “Jude” and “Hamlet,” Kate became an international star after her impressive performance in the 1997 James Cameron film “Titanic,” where she worked opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. She also won a Best Actress Oscar Award.
After her successful Titanic, Kate Winslet appeared in more movies with diverse characters such as “Holy Smoke,” “Hideous Kinky,” “Quills,” “Iris” and “The Life of David Gale.” In 2004, she worked alongside Jim Carrey in the critically acclaimed movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” followed by the film “Finding Neverland” opposite Johnny Depp.
Other notable movie credits of Kate Winslet include “Romance & Cigarettes,” “The Holiday,” “Little Children,” and award-winning 2008 films “The Reader” and “Revolutionary Road,” where she reunited with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Kate Winslet met actor Stephen Tredre on the set of the BBC sitcom Dark Season in 1991 and they dated for five years. After the production of Titanic, Tredre died of bone cancer. On November 22, 1998, Kate married director Jim Threapleton, with whom she has a daughter named Mia Honey (born October 12, 2000). Threapleton and Winslet finalized their divorce in 2001. By 2002, Kate Winslet was dating Sam Mendes, whom she married on May 2003. Their son Jon Alfie was born on December 22, 2003.
